Getting Better by The Beatles

I used to get mad at my school (No I can't complain)
The teachers who taught me weren't cool (No I can't complain)
You're holding me down (Oh), turning me round (Oh)
Filling me up with your rules (Foolish rules)

I've got to admit it's getting better (Better)
A little better all the time (It can't get more worse)
I have to admit it's getting better (Better)
It's getting better since you've been mine

Me used to be angry young man
Me hiding me head in the sand
You gave me the word, I finally heard
I'm doing the best that I can

I've got to admit it's getting better (Better)
A little better all the time (It can't get more worse)
I have to admit it's getting better (Better)
It's getting better since you've been mine
Getting so much better all the time
It's getting better all the time
Better, better, better
It's getting better all the time
Better, better, better

I used to be cruel to my woman
I beat her and kept her apart from the things that she loved
Man I was mean but I'm changing my scene
And I'm doing the best that I can (Ooh)

I admit it's getting better (Better)
A little better all the time (It can't get more worse)
Yes I admit it's getting better (Better)
It's getting better since you've been mine
Getting so much better all the time
It's getting better all the time
Better, better, better
It's getting better all the time
Better, better, better
Getting so much better all the time

Ok it's a Beatles song, so I can't help but geek out a little bit

So the title of the song popped into Paul's head one day whilst walking his dog Martha

He brought it back to John and about 12 hours later they brought it to George and Ringo & started recording it

Paul wrote 2/3 of the song, but one of John's contributions was 'it can't get much worse'

So was the cruel women bit of lyrics, he was a mean lover in his youth

No sir, I do not like it

I also usually don't like it when bands cover Beatles songs, but the I Am Sam soundtrack has a few

and Gomez does a decent version of this song

I think the trick is you have to make it your own version as opposed to trying to just replicate it

Did you know since they just released a new remastered version with extra outtakes (some are pretty cool)

-that it's the number one album in the UK this week

50 years ago today - on June 1st

When recording started for this album, they recorded Strawberry Fields Forever

But their manager wanted a single, so it never made it onto the album

~ Ok I'm done for now

Wow. He used to beat his woman? That's a strange line. Martha is not a good name for a dog. That's a hippo name. George and Martha. The only Beatles songs I know are from accedently hearing them because Dan was listening. I always meant to buy all their albums and listen to them but I turned into an asshole before that could happen.

It's a very strange line that has always felt jarring - for what is otherwise a great song

I also thought Martha was an odd name for a dog

But the song Martha My Dear on the White Album gives some validity to naming your dog as such

and it's also a great name for a Hippo

I would also accept a Marmot or Muskrat
