Looking back at the years gone by like so many summer fields
In sixty-five I was seventeen and running up one-o-one
I don't know where I'm running now, I'm just running on
Running on - running on empty
Running on - running blind
Running on - running into the sun
But I'm running behind
Gotta do what you can just to keep your love alive
Trying not to confuse it with what you do to survive
In sixty-nine I was twenty-one and I called the road my own
I don't know when that road turned onto the road I'm on
Running on - running on empty
Running on - running blind
Running on - running into the sun
But I'm running behind
Everyone I know, everywhere I go
People need some reason to believe
I don't know about anyone but me
If it takes all night, that'll be all right
If I can get you to smile before I leave
Looking out at the road rushing under my wheels
I don't know how to tell you all just how crazy this life feels
I look around for the friends that I used to turn to to pull me through
Looking into their eyes I see them running too
Running on - running on empty
Running on - running blind
Running on - running into the sun
But I'm running behind
Honey you really tempt me
You know the way you look so kind
I'd love to stick around but I'm running behind
You know I don't even know what I'm hoping to find
Running into the sun but I'm running behind
In sixty-five I was seventeen and running up one-o-one
I don't know where I'm running now, I'm just running on
Running on - running on empty
Running on - running blind

Hey we've all been there - running on fumes
This could be like the theme song for the rabbit in Alice in Wonderland
He was always late - running to wherever he had to go
and you know he probably skipped a meal here and there
But he kept going - running to that fictitious destination
But I've heard bunnies are like walls when you're playing tennis - just relentless
This is probably Jackson Browne's most famous tune - but I've heard a lot of em
My mom's a fan and I heard a lot of his stuff growing up
So I come from experience when I say - I do not like Jackson Browne's music
Nope - not one bit
I lump him in with James Taylor and Slim Whitman
Another group of musicians who should have had their instruments taken away from them a long time ago
That being said, this song's ok - it's been in a few good movies/shows
If this was his one hit wonder I would tip my cap to the gent
But it's not and he's sold 18 million copies of songs that rival beige pants
My god that's it! Jackson Browne is a pair of beige pants
I'm running on fumes. I get it. Life is hard. So hard. Even harder when you are forced to listen to horrible music. I am enraged
Life is hard. But it also has radness. I never paid much attention to Jackson Brown. For some reason I thought he was a person of color. Maybe that's because his first name is Jackson and my mind went to the Jackson 5, or that this last name is Brown and I thought it might be descriptive. At any rate, yes, I know what it is like to run on fumes. But your tank ain't empty until its actually empty. Then you got to call your wife to come and bring you some gas and she scorns you when she does because why the hell would you let yourself run out of gas?
Dude. Your wife is right. You are an idiot if you run out of gas after the age of 21
