Well, if you ever plan to motor west
Travel my way, take the highway, that's the best
Get your kicks on Route 66
Well it winds from Chicago to L. A.
More than two thousand miles all the way
Get your kicks on Route 66
Well it goes to St. Louis, down to Missouri
Oklahoma City looks oh, so pretty
You'll see Amarillo, Gallup, New Mexico
Flagstaff, Arizona, don't forget Wynonna
Kingman, Barstow, San Bernardino
You get hip to this kind of trip
I'm gonna take that California trip
Get your kicks on Route 66
Well it goes to St. Louis, down to Missouri
Oklahoma City looks oh, so pretty
You
You'll see Amarillo, Gallup, New Mexico
Flagstaff, Arizona, don't forget Wynonna
Kingman, Barstow, San Bernardino
You get hip to this kind of trip
I'm gonna take that California trip
Get your kicks on Route 66
Get your kicks on Route 66
Get your kicks on Route 66
Get your kicks on Route 66
Get your kicks on Route 66

So Route 66 was one of the original highways starting in November of 1926
Running from Chicago to L.A., it became a famous road with the help of this song (the original) and the TV show
It was the route you took to go out west, and was rather helpful during the Dust Bowl debacle
It kept economies alive as their customers motored along the road
But its days were numbered when the new Interstate Highway System was built
By 1985 it was completely replaced into segments for the IHS
However, you can still ride through a part of it in the Midwest that has been dubbed the "Historic Route 66"
I never knew some of this before today, nor did I know how many covers there are of this song
Bing Crosby, The Rolling Stones, Manhattan Transfer, these blokes
Plus the movie Cars used versions by Chuck Berry and John Mayer
This song has always made me think of souvenirs in/and the desert
I have driven Route 66 a few times. It’s both awesome and sad cuz there are still old broken down diners and gas stations and motels. Also I once saw a pair of shoes that were tossed up onto the power line. I’ve never understood why people do that. I was literally out in the middle of nowhere on Route 66 and saw this pair of Chuck Tayler converse dangling from a wire. I wondered who did it. And why. This version of the song is not very good. But I’m sure Depeche Mode loved it. English people are silly. Mike cheedle loved Depeche Mode more than anything
