Pink Houses by John Cougar Mellencamp

There's a black man with a black cat

Livin' in a black neighborhoodHe's got an interstate runnin' through his front yardYou know he thinks he's got it so goodAnd there's a woman in the kitchenCleanin' up the evenin' slopAnd he looks at her and says, "Hey darlin'I can remember when you could stop a clock"
Ah, but ain't that America for you and me?Ain't that America? Somethin' to see, babyAin't that America? Home of the free, yeahLittle pink houses for you and meOoh yeah, for you and me
Well, there's a young man in a t-shirtListenin' to a rockin' rollin' stationHe's got greasy hair, greasy smileHe says, "Lord, this must be my destination"'Cause they told me when I was youngerSaid, "Boy, you're gonna be president"But just like everything else those old crazy dreamsJust kinda came and went
Ah, but ain't that America for you and me?Ain't that America? Somethin' to see, babyAin't that America? Home of the free, yeahLittle pink houses for you and meAh, yeah, baby, for you and me
Well, there's people and more peopleWhat do they know, know, know?Go to work in some high riseAnd vacation down at the Gulf of Mexico, ooh, yeahAnd there's winners and there's losersBut they ain't no big deal'Cause the simple man, baby, pays for the thrills, the billsThe pills that kill
Ah, but ain't that America for you and me?Ain't that America? Somethin' to see, babyAin't that America? Home of the free, yeahLittle pink houses for you and me, oohOoh yeah
Ain't that America for you and me?Ain't that America? Hey, somethin' to see, babyAin't that America? Oh, the home of the freeOoh yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeahLittle pink houses, baby, for you and me
Ooh yeahOoh yeah

Ever since I was a little kid, I've always latched on to these tiny parts of certain songs

Parts that never get old to me, but most probably ignore

~ and I look forward to them every time I hear the song

And when I get to that favorite part, all is right in the world for that one little moment

Well one of those is in this tune, probably one of, if not his best

And the silly part that I love is at the end of the guitar solo when they sing "ooh yeah"

It's so damn simple, but it makes me happy every time

'Cause the simple man baby, pays the thrills, the bills, the pills that kill'

Top drawer lyric John Cougar, top drawer

And of course I must tell the joke

Where do cantaloupes go for the summer?

wow. that's an awesome joke.

okay so i listened to the part that you love so much Dan and yes that is something i would have overlooked. but from now on i will always listen to that part and think of you loving it and it will make me happy.

this is a rad song. some very good moments of living are captured.

some questions:

why can't I have hair like john cougar mellencamp?
why did they show the girl stumbling out of the convertible during the section where the boy is talking about his lost dreams?
why are there so many american flag shots? to me this is less a patriotic song and more of just what it's like living for all people.
What was going through John Cougar Mellencamp's mind when he was dancing in the yellow flowers?
