Scare Away The Dark by Passenger

Well, sing, sing at the top of your voice,
Love without fear in your heart.
Feel, feel like you still have a choice
If we all light up we can scare away the dark

We wish our weekdays away
Spend our weekends in bed
Drink ourselves stupid
And work ourselves dead
And all just because that's what mom and dad said we should do

We should run through the forest
We should swim in the streams
We should laugh, we should cry,
We should love, we should dream
We should stare at the stars and not just the screens
You should hear what I'm saying and know what it means

To sing, sing at the top of your voice,
Love without fear in your heart.
Feel, feel like you still have a choice
If we all light up we can scare away the dark

Well, we wish we were happier, thinner and fitter,
We wish we weren't losers and liars and quitters
We want something more not just nasty and bitter
We want something real not just hash tags and Twitter

It's the meaning of life and it's streamed live on YouTube
But I bet Gangnam Style will still get more views
We're scared of drowning, flying and shooters
But we're all slowly dying in front of fucking computers

So sing, sing at the top of your voice,
Oh, love without fear in your heart.
Can you feel, feel like you still have a choice
If we all light up we can scare away the dark

Yes. This song is wonderful. A very refreshing message. Beautiful. I love the line that says we engage in such disfuntional behavior because it's what our parents did. This song is encouraging you to break free of the collective conditioning of the past and live as we were meant to live. Free and full of love. But then anger steps in. He is so upset about the Fucking computers and twitter and hash tags. This takes away from the beauty of the first half of the song. To truly be free and happy we should be able to embrace the world as it truly is. Not just how we would wish it could be. To call out and blame these things as obstacles in our path to freedom and joy creates an uneasy feeling to me. Yes I agree. Sing. Change. Be who you truly are! But do it in a loving way that embraces the world exactly how it is. Because the way the world is is exactly how it should be. Why should it be the way it is? Because it IS that way. It has to be the way it is because only when the world becomes so unmanageable and insane do we finally begin to want something more. Love the insanity. The mundane, the hopelessness. For in that dark cloud cokes the inspiration to write such a song with a beautiful message.

Very good comment. I agree that we should accept things for what they are. Does that mean we should accept injustice though? That we should not work toward a more equal world? I think king had the right idea. We do not accept injustice but we meet injustice with love. In this way we are in control of the only thing we really can control, ourselves. In so doing things begin to change.

I agree with Berv, in that the song starts off on a very positive note. It urges us to capture the free spirits we were in our youth, and to never stop exploring. Where is that emotional roller coaster gone to? Then it does take the dark turn that brings us to him registering his complaints. The fact that he fit Gangnam style into the lyrics reminded me of when Train fit "tae-bo" into the lyrics of 'Drops of Jupiter'. A silly addition to a song that had a great start.
