Lean On Me by Bill Withers

Sometimes in our lives
We all have pain, we all have sorrow.
But if we are wise,
We know that there's always tomorrow.

Lean on me when you're not strong
I'll be your friend, I'll help you carry on
For it won't be long
'Til I'm gonna need somebody to lean on.

Please swallow your pride
If I have things you need to borrow
For no one can fill those of your needs
That you won't let show.

You just call on me, brother, when you need a hand
We all need somebody to lean on.
I just might have a problem that you'll understand,
We all need somebody to lean on.

Lean on me when you're not strong
And I'll be your friend I'll help you carry on
For it won't be long
'Til I'm gonna need somebody to lean on

You just call on me, brother, when you need a hand
We all need somebody to lean on.
I just might have a problem that you'll understand,
We all need somebody to lean on.

If there is a load
You have to bear
That you can't carry
I'm right up the road
I'll share your load
If you just call me.

Call me if you need a friend
Call me, call me, uh-huh
Call me when you need a friend
Call me if you ever need a friend
Call me, call me
Call me, call me
Call me, call me
Call me, call me
Call me if you need a friend
Call me, call me
Call me, call me
Call me, call me
Call me, call me
Call me

I remember when the California Raisins covered this song. It was the first time I heard it. I bought their cassette tape because I wanted their hit song “heard it through the grapevine” but I ended up liking this song better. I used to ride my bike to upper crust and listen on my Walkman. Then I became an adult and heard the original. And then I discover bill withers. And I realized what I was missing. Sad times indeed. He was the soundtrack of my wedding. One of the great ones.

Club Nouveau's cover of this song in the 80's was my first listen

I loved it - it was poppy and deep at the same time and it was the 80's

Then I learned it was a cover

~ and I heard Bill sing it and realized that's how the song was meant to be

I'm not knocking covers of it necessarily

~ it's just that some songs don't need to be covered

They're perfect just the way they are

I read this quip about Joe Walsh who was a good friend of Bill Withers

~ and he said that his friend had no idea how many people he touched with his music
