Light from Next to Normal

Natalie:
We need some light.
First of all, we need some light.
You can't sit here in the dark.
And all alone, it's a sorry sight.
It's just you and me.
We'll live, you'll see.

Dan:
Night after night,
We'd sit and wait for the morning light.
But we've waited far too long,
For all that's wrong to be made right.

Diana:
Day after day,
Wishing all our cares away.
Trying to fight the things we feel,
But some hurts never heal.
Some ghost are never gone,
But we go on,
We still go on.

And you find some way to survive
And you find out you don't have to be happy at all,
To be happy you're alive.

Natalie:
Day after day,
Give me clouds, and rain and gray.
Give me pain, if that's what's real.

Henry and Natalie:
It's the price we pay to feel.

Dan and Diana:
The price of love is loss,

Dan:
But still we pay.

Dan and Henry:
We love anyway.

Gabe:
And when the night has finally gone.
And when we see the new day dawn.
We'll wonder how we wandered for so long, so blind.
The wasted world we thought we knew,
The light will make it look brand new.
So

All:
Let it
Let it
Let it
Let it
Let it
Shine, shine, shine.

Day after day (day after day),
We'll find the will to find our way.
Knowing that the darkest skies will someday see the sun.

Dan:
When our long night is done,

Dan and Natalie:
There will be light.

Diana:
(There will be light.
There will be light.)

All:
There will be light.
When we open up our light.
Sons and daughters, husbands, wives.
Can fight that fight.
There will be light.
There will be light.
There will be light.
There will be light.

I've never heard of this song or musical for that matter

'The price of love is loss, but still we pay, we love anyway'

That's some truth right there, good stuff

So they're looking for some light to shine

Like the magical hours of the winter days in London when the sky used to drop like a velvet drape and the street lights and

lamps popped on in protest?

~ or like the ending of Hitchcock's Foreign Correspondent when the lights go out in the radio station during the Blitz and Joel

McCrea calls into the mike 'Hello, America. Hang onto your lights. They're the only lights left in the world'

~ or are we talking people as lights?

- like how Louis Armstrong shined brighter than the light off his trumpet

- or how Fred Astaire was light on his feet

- and then friends are like lights in winter, the older the friend, the brighter the light

According to Roger Rosenblatt - for winter lights to do their thing, there must be darkness and much cold around

- You said that the snow was meant for us alone, and so we stayed out until it got dark and darker still, and there was no light in

the world but you

I have never heard of this musical. I am Diana in this song. Except I don’t believe the price of love is loss. There is no price of love. Love doesn’t even really exist. Not as a thing anyway. If you are experiencing real love you don’t have to pay for it in loss. That’s foolish. Only silly child love is paid for in losss.

Mr. Dan you are a poet. You need to write more. And Mr. Aaron, love does exist. Maybe not in the Hollywood portrayal but it exists. Even a dog is capable of love. In fact, they are experts at love. Pure and simple. But you hate dogs. So there we are. Merry Christmas.

No. Actually no. Love is a concept. It does not exist. It is not real. There is no love
