The Last DJ by Tom Petty

Well you can't turn him into a company man
You can't turn him into a whore
And the boys upstairs just don't understand anymore
Well the top brass don't like him talking so much
And he won't play what they say to play
And he don't want to change what don't need to change
And there goes the last DJ
Who plays what he wants to play
And says what he wants to say
Hey, hey, hey
And there goes your freedom of choice
There goes the last human voice
There goes the last DJ
Well some folks say they're gonna hang him so high
Because you just can't do what he did
There's some things you just can't put in the minds of those kids
As we celebrate mediocrity all the boys upstairs want to see
How much you'll pay for what you used to get for free
And there goes the last DJ
Who plays what he wants to play
And says what he wants to say
Hey, hey, hey
And there goes your freedom of choice
There goes the last human voice
And there goes the last DJ

Well he got him a station down in Mexico
And sometimes it will kinda come in
And I'll bust a move and remember how it was back then
There goes the last DJ
Who plays what he wants to play
And says what he wants to say
Hey, hey, hey
And there goes your freedom of choice
There goes the last human voice
And there goes the last DJ

He had the chops then, He has them now

Well. Things have changed for sure. Radio is gone. I no longer listen to it. The old days of just a dj playing what he or she wanted are over. Whenever there is an opportunity to make money that will take priority over A NOTHING. I'm not sure if the old days of radio were really all that different than today. Ultimately there was some form of brass who owned the station and was pulling strings in some fashion. But it does appear that there was a "golden age" where things were at least better than today. But one thing that hasn't changed is that humans will always act to serve their own interests above all things. Even if they are fans of Tom Petty. And fans of the glory days. They will find a way to justify lame actions as long as it is feeding their family and keeping their fears at bay temporarily. Until this fundamental reality shifts there will never be anything pure in this world. There will never be flowers.

I would agree that, while there are good people, and there definitely bad people, most people are just trying to get by in their own sphere. That is why it is so important to turn your eye inward honestly while also turning it outward beyond our own circle of existence.
