Mama by Genesis

I can't see you mama
but I can hardly wait
ooh to touch and to feel you mama
oh I just can't keep away
in the heat and the steam of the city
oh its got me running and I just can't brake
so say you'll help me mama
cos its getting so hard

Now I can't keep you mama
but I know you're always there
you listen, you teach me mama
and I know inside you care
so get down, down here beside me
oh you ain't going nowhere
no I won't hurt you mama
but its getting so hard

Can't you see me here mama
mama mama mama please
can't you feel my heart
can't you feel my heart
can't you feel my heart oh
now listen to me mama
mama mama
you're taking away my last chance
don't take it away
can't you feel my heart?

It's hot, too hot for me mama
but I can hardly wait
my eyes they're burning mama
and I can feel my body shake
don't stop, don't stop me mama
oh make the pain, make it go away
no I won't hurt you mama
but its getting so hard

Now I can't see you mama
but I know you're always there
you taunt, you tease me mama
but I never never can keep away
it's the heat and the steam of the city
oh got me running and I just can't brake
so stay don't leave me mama
cos its getting so hard

I have new respect for Collins now that I know he sang such a twisted song

Chris...you fucking mama's boy. Nuff said you sad fucker. Even Dan will give you shit for this one. What is it about you and picking the one fucking song that blows from every goddamn artist you've chosen? What's next? Chaka Kahn's greatest hits? You fucking blowhard piece-o-shit.

Genesis used to be an interesting band before Peter Gabriel left the band. The lamb lies down on Broadway is a very bizzar and interesting album. They were committed to pushing music in a new direction and not conforming to the norms of their cohorts. This song is indeed representative of that era but like much of their old stuff it doesn't make much sense to me. I suspect that both Collins and Gabriel had experienced some fucked up shit when they were young. Sexual stuff. Much like Pete Townsend. Much of this is worked out in their music. Which is good for them. But most of the time I'm sad to have to be along for the ride

This song makes me think of two things. The first is, for some reason, it makes me think of a Mom and her son trying to keep warm inside the cut open belly of a Taun-taun. (Because these lyrics are fucked up, so why not?)
The second is the road trip I took with Mr. Scott Galbreath to visit our girlfriends in Oregon. His truck didn't have a tape player, so we borrowed a fisher price tape player. I brought mix tapes filled with enormous amounts of songs, with genres all over the map. Scott brought Phil Collins. I didn't even know he had that many albums, but unfortunately, that bastard put out quite a few in his time away from Genesis. So thank you Chris for drudging up that memory with such a bizarre song choice.
