What I Am by Edie Brickell & New Bohemians

I'm not aware of too many things
I know what I know, if you know what I mean
Philosophy is the talk on a cereal box
Religion is the smile on a dog
I'm not aware of too many things
I know what I know, if you know what I mean, d-doo yeah

Choke me in the shallow waters
Before I get too deep

What I am is what I am
Are you what you are or what?
What I am is what I am
Are you what you are, or?

Oh, I'm not aware of too many things
I know what I know, if you know what I mean
Philosophy is a walk on the slippery rocks
Religion is a light in the fog
I'm not aware of too many things
I know what I know, if you know what I mean, d-doo yeah

Choke me in the shallow water
Before I get too deep

What I am is what I am
Are you what you are or what?
What I am is what I am
Are you what you are or what?

What I am is what I am
Are you what you are or what?
What I am is what I am
Are you what you are or what you are, and?

What I am is what I am
Are you what you are or what?

Don't let me get too deep
Don't let me get too deep
Don't let me get too deep
Don't let me get too deep

Choke me in the shallow water
Before I get too deep
Choke me in the shallow water
Before I get too deep

Choke me in the shallow water
Before I get too deep
Choke me in the shallow water
Before I get too deep

A VERY DARK BUT THANKFULLY BRIEF MOMENT IN INDI ROCK

As is the case with most songs there is some that makes sense and some that doesn't. It had a great opening line. I'm not aware of too many things. It has a very humbling tone. I don't know much, beware of philosophy etc. But I'm confused. If philosophy is the writing on a cereal box and a walk on slippery rocks then why would religion be the smile on a dog and the light in a fog. I agree that the path to knowing ones self and finding joy and god ultimately can't be found through philosophy. But if discussing the philsophical nature of life and sharing intellectual ideas is not a path to god, surly following a strict religious dogma invented by men for the sole purpose of controlling thought and manipulating action can't be any better. Why on earth is this line in the song? If you are to truly "know what I am" as the song states then surly religion is not a light in the fog. If anything religion IS the fog.
And then there is the "choke me in the shallow water" line. Not sure what this is all about. Sounds like she wants to die before she gets too involved with her life. Maybe she feels like the longer she lives the less connected she feels to what is real and the more chances she has to be corrupted. Sounds to me like she over heard Paul Simon writing a song and just stole a few lines. But could t figure out how to out them all together.
