You Don't Own Me by Leslie Gore

You don't own me
I'm not just one of your many toys,
You don't own me
Don't say I can't go with other boys

And don't tell me what to do,
and don't tell me what to say,
and please when I go out with you,
don't put me on display,

You don't own me ,
Don't try to change me in any way,
You don't own me,
Don't tie me down caz i'll never stay,

I don't tell you what to say,
I don't tell you what to do,
So just let me be myself,
That's all I ask of you,

I'm young and I love to be young,
I'm free and I love to be free,
To live my life the way I want,
To say and do whatever I please.

I'm young and I love to be young,
I'm free and I love to be free,
To live my life the way I want,
To say and do whatever I please.

No no, you don't own me...you don't own me, you don't own me
we're young and we love to be young, you dont own me..

No no, you don't own me...you don't own me, you don't own me
we're young and we love to be young, you dont own me..

SUSAN OWNS ME THOUGH

I think that most relationships are built in he premises of ownership. You complete me. You are an extension of me. This is conditional love. As long as you do what I like and what is good for me i will love you. If you do anything that doesn't jive with me I will stop. This is not real love. And ultimately live built in this type of thinking is doomed. There is not much real love in this world.

Oh I think there is a lot of love in the world. But in the "romantic" ideal we have bought into this idea of completion etc. etc. Love is a choice. It is something to be built and maintained. There is much more to it than where a bloke puts his carrot.
