Brown Sugar by The Rolling Stones

Gold coast slave ship bound for cotton fields
Sold in a market down in New Orleans
Scarred old slaver knows he's doing alright
Hear him whip the women just around midnight

Brown sugar how come you taste so good?
Brown sugar just like a young girl should

Drums beating, cold English blood runs hot
Lady of the house wonderin' where it's gonna stop
House boy knows that he's doing alright
You shoulda heard him just around midnight

Brown sugar how come you taste so good, now?
Brown sugar just like a young girl should, now

Ah, get along, brown sugar how come you taste so good, baby?
Ah, got me feelin' now, brown sugar just like a black girl should

I bet your mama was a tent show queen
And all her boyfriends were sweet sixteen
I'm no schoolboy but I know what I like
You shoulda heard me just around midnight

Brown sugar how come you taste so good, baby?
Ah, brown sugar just like a young girl should, yeah

I said yeah, yeah, yeah, woo
How come you... how come you taste so good?
Yeah, yeah, yeah, woo
Just like a... just like a black girl should
Yeah, yeah, yeah, woo

IM JUST GUESSING HERE BUT I HAVE A FEELING THAT MICK IS USING BROWN SUGAR AS A METAPHORE HERE

I never realized what this song was about. I always assumed it was another sexy song about 60’s. Didn’t realize it was a comment about sexual with slaves. Interesting to have these lyrics combined with upbeat rock music. Wonder what they were thinking when they wrote it. Not exactly your typical candy coated stupid rock tune. Dan, tell me the history of this song. Explain it

Well now there are a few stories behind this one

Bill Wyman(original bassist) said it was partially inspired by back up singer Claudia Leneer

She was one of Ike Turner's Ikettes and they toured with the Stones in 69'

OR

It was inspired by a singer named Marsha Hunt who was cast in the London musical HAIR

and those two secretly had a relationship that lead to a baby

Another theory is that the use of slavery & whipping is a double meaning for the perils

-of being 'mastered' by the Brown Heroin or Brown Sugar

- due to the drug turning brown when cooked

Now this one is tough to figure out because the lyric starts with slaves being sold in New Orleans

to their horrible white masters who do horrible things

Serious subject matter, but the way it's built -

the song comes off as a rocking tune about a white guy who has sex with a black woman

I mean what the hell are you getting at with this one Mick?

A couple fun facts -

This song was used in commercials for Kahlua and Pepsi

This song was one of four songs they agreed not to play in China

This song is on Hot Rocks - so I've been listening to this one since I was in junior high

It's a great song with confusing lyrics

The verses are tough - but the chorus is fun
